Desa Pedawa or Pedawa village is an authentic Bali village known by Balinese as the Bali Aga or Bali Mula. This village is inhabited by native people in Bali before the arrival of Majapahit Hindu (Siva-Buddha) people. This is proved by the existence of historical heritage in the Megalithic era in the form of two sarcophagus in this village area. Also It was found that Pedawa village did not have a caste system (social hierarchy), unlike villages in Bali island.
Before this village was named Desa Pedawa, the name given to this village was Mount Tambleg, which meant innocent people. However, then the name changed to Gunung Sari which means fertile area. After experiencing a change of name twice, finally the name Pedawa which means Panjak Dewa was used as the name of this village since the 15th century. The indigenous inhabitants of the village of Pedawa, who are called Bali Aga people, believe that their ancestors came from the Lake Tamblingan area in Buleleng Regency, borders with Tabanan Regency.
Desa Pedawa is in an elevation position ranging between 450-800 meters above sea level. Located at a distance of 12 km from Banjar District and 30 km from Singaraja City. This village has five sub-village (Banjar) called 'Sambangan'. The livelihoods of the population are generally farming and in the past this area was very famous for the production of palm sugar. Many people became tappers of palm sugar at that time.
The increasing number of people makes green lands thinning and the level of competition for jobs is increasing, inevitably this ultimately changes livelihoods and simultaneously changes people's lifestyles. Now only a few people make palm sugar, and have switched to other professions that are more profitable.
Change does not only occur in the community, but also changes in the architecture of traditional homes are inevitable. Changes that occur in form, function and building elements are a form of adaptation to the weather, technological developments and lifestyle changes.
Bandung Rangki and Sri Dandan are authentic shacks from Pedawa village. Bandung Rangki is a shack that has as many as 18 pillars, and Sri Dandan is a shack that has 16 pillars. The roof structure is a bamboo roof structure and roof covering material in the form of bamboo shingles and dried reeds or Satintail grass. Walls of buildings and openings in the form of woven walls of bamboo and clay and Floor material made of clay too.
Bandung Rangki and Sri Dandan have their own functions that are very unique and very influenced by the beliefs of the local community and their life patterns. The functions that exist in the shack include the basic functions of the house but all are integrated into a traditional Pedawa house building. The functions are:
There are two beds called Bale Gede and Bale Cenik. Bale Gede used by parents for sleeping and Bale Cenik used by kids for sleeping.
(2) Kitchen and making a palm sugar.
The kitchen known as 'Paon' consists of three important parts, namely: Paon Tuak (largest size), Paon Jakan (medium size) and Irun (measuring slightly smaller than Paon Jakan).
(3) Social room.
Inner space which is an empty space in the middle of a traditional house besides being a circulation area in the house, is also a shared area that can be used to chat with fellow residents or receive relatives.
While the additional space that functions as a reception area or lounge while working on space work is called Terempang or front porch.
'Pelangkiran' which functions to reap the ancestors of each family in the house above Bale Gede.
Additional area that is located next to the front porch or 'Terempang', this room is called 'Sepen'. This room usually stores worship tools and also some items that need to be stored. There is also a building called 'Jineng' (Lumbung) whose position is in front of a house that functions to store rice yields for residents who work as farmers.
